Employment

University of Cincinnati - Clermont College, Batavia, OH:
Associate Professor, Emerita, of Biology 2019-present
Associate Professor, Emerita—Adjunct, of Biology 2013-2019
(continued to teach part-time)
Associate Professor of Biology 2005-2012
Assistant Professor of Biology 1999-2005
Instructor of Biology 1994-1999
Visiting Instructor in Biology 1993-1994
Lecturer on Biology 1988-1993
I have taught General and Introductory Biology Lecture and Laboratory courses and the sophomore-level Ecology and Evolution course, including development of interactive, course-related Web sites for these courses. I developed all syllabi and instructional materials for the sophomore Ecology and Evolution course and the General Biology lecture/lab sequence as new courses. I, along with David Fankhauser, developed the lab protocols for, and I developed the corresponding Web pages for use by all instructors in all sections of the General Biology Lab and majors’ Biology Lab laboratory course sequences. As the university transitioned from quarters to semesters, I reworked and developed the syllabi, and course materials ( protocols and Web pages) for the new majors’ Biology Lab course sequence. Some of my other duties have also included serving as departmental Webmaster (many of my student-learning-centered Web pages have been online since 1995), serving as Biology-Chemistry lab manager, supervising student assistants and new full- and part-time faculty, and maintaining live plants and animals used in teaching. In addition to the lab protocols and Web pages, I have done extensive photography and graphics work to more-clearly illustrate for students, the concepts, equipment, and organisms they are being asked to master. I also established and curate a teaching insect collection and herbarium.

Cincinnati Zoo Insect World, Cincinnati, OH: Entomologist.
I cared for living insects and other animals, including the background research necessary to establish breeding colonies of exotic species, most notably the Harlequin Beetle (Acrocinus longimanus), for which the Zoo received a prestigious award in 1986. I created and maintained educational public displays and slide-tape presentations. I trained and supervised volunteers and high-school students. I helped plan and coordinate several special events with insect themes. I worked with various local, national, and international press (Television Français, 3-2-1-Contact, Newton’s Apple, Reading Rainbow, Cable News Network) as well as the general public. 1978-1988

Remembrance Inc. DBA Memory Lane, Montgomery, AL:
I aided with bookkeeping, inventory maintenance, imprinting services, and design of merchandising displays, as well as assisting customers. 1977-1978

Cub Scout Day Camp Program, Lafayette, IN: Crafts Director.
I assisted in general planning and set-up of day camp sessions for 8- to 10-year-old boys, planned and taught educational crafts activities, and played guitar for group singing. Summer 1977

Purdue University, West Lafayette, IN: Biology Laboratory Technician.
I assisted with research on DNA synthesis. 1975-1977

Valparaiso University, Valparaiso, IN: Part-time Instructor in Biology.
I taught the Introductory Entomology course. Spring 1975

Academic Experience

Graduate Research Assistant, Purdue University.
I conducted research in conjunction with my thesis topic, including curatorial work in the Orthoptera section of the departmental research collection. I performed quality control testing on cereal products for a major baby food manufacturer. 1972-1974

4-H Camp Entomology Counselor, Purdue University.
I taught and advised junior high students working on a 4-H Entomology Project in a camp setting. Summer 1973

Biology Department Student-Aide, Valparaiso University.
I was responsible for set-up for all freshman biology laboratory sessions and practical tests. I organized and maintained equipment and supplies for freshman biology laboratories and assisted in teaching laboratory sections. I supervised and trained other student aides. I was asked to provide summer care for the school’s fruit fly colonies and assistance with preparations for the genetics and physiology laboratory courses. 1969-1972
